PORTAL DE NOTÍCIAS DA UNIJUÍ

The Foreign Languages Day at Unijuí is an initiative of the vice-rectories of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies, Research and Extension, with the support of the International Relations Office, and aims to promote the appreciation of linguistic and cultural diversity, encouraging the use of different languages at the university spaces. The initiative seeks to encourage linguistic diversity among students, professors and the academic community; stimulate interest in learning foreign languages, contributing to intercultural education; create opportunities for interaction with international students, strengthening the internationalization of the university; involve different areas of knowledge in a practical and playful experience of communication in the classroom in languages, such as English, Spanish, French, Italian, among others. Furthermore, the day also celebrates the presence of different cultures in the academic environment, promoting respect and inclusion.

In an increasingly globalized job market, proficiency in a second language stopped being a differential to become an essential requirement in many areas. Multinational companies, such as Apple, Nestlé and Samsung, often require fluency in foreign languages, especially English, in their selection processes. According to a study by Page Personnel, 60% of available positions currently require fluency in English, and this requirement is expected to increase for professionals in different sectors in the coming years. Furthermore, research indicates that bilingual professionals can earn significantly higher salaries; for example, Catho revealed that workers who are fluent in English can earn between 47% and 52% more than those who do not speak a second language. Learning a new language also contributes to the development of cognitive skills, such as critical thinking and creativity, which are highly valued in today's corporate environment.

For those who want to learn a new language at no cost, there are several free platforms and resources available. Duolingo, for example, is a widely used application that offers courses in over 40 languages, using a gamified approach to facilitate learning, among many other applications available on the market. Participating in online study groups and watching content from foreign television networks, such as BBC Learning English or TV5Monde, are also effective strategies for immersing yourself in the language and cultural understanding. At Unijuí, through the International Relations Office, Foreign Language Conversation Clubs are offered free of charge. VRPGPE, with the support of the Languages Course, also offers the Languages on Campus course, which is being reformulated for its return in August, with a more dynamic proposal and at affordable costs. These resources, combined with discipline and regular practice, can provide a solid foundation for fluency in a new language.
